PAINT INCOMPATIBILITY – EXTERIOR
Loss of adhesion where a water-based topcoat is applied over many old coats of alkyd or oil-based paint.
Causes
- Use of water-based latex paint over multiple coats of old alkyd or oil-based paint causes the old paint to “lift-off” the substrate.
Solutions
- Remove the existing paint and prepare the surface – cleaning, sanding, and spot-priming where necessary – before repainting with a top-quality latex exterior paint. Follow appropriate safety precautions if the old paint may contain lead.
- Prime any bare surface with a high-quality primer and allow it to dry thoroughly.
- Paint with high-quality paint in the desired finish.
